General Instructions

  1. The submitted manuscripts or substantial parts of them must not be formally published in any other peer-reviewed journal and must not under consideration by any other journal.
  2. All authors ensure that they have furnished a substantial contribution to the paper and that they are in agreement with the form and contents of the manuscript. Corresponding authors confirm that they hold the copyrights to their articles as well as to the text and illustrations attached therein in the authors´ contract.
  3. Information about the source for figures, tables, pictures, etc. should be given in the captions.
  4. For copyrighted material authors must obtain written permission from the copyright(s) holder(s) and submit with the manuscript.
  5. The authors of articles published by IREE grant IREE the right to store the articles in its databases for an unlimited period of time and to distribute and reproduce the articles electronically. The authors retain all remaining exploitation rights to their articles, subject to the condition that any further use of the articles shall make reference to their original publication in IREE (“originally published in IREE”).
  6. Authors should indicate in the title page, whether the research reported in their paper was the result of a for-pay consulting relationship or if they or their employer has a financial interest in the topic of the paper which might constitute a conflict of interest.
  7. Supplementary material, such as data sets, programming code and log files (see our »Data Availability Policy and Guidelines for submissions by sections below) must be submitted to the ZBW Journal Data Archive (JDA). After uploading your manuscript to OJS you will receive an email to register for JDA (probably not instantly but the next day). Please follow the instructions sent with this mail.
  8. Articles should be clear, concise, well organized, and written in English, with correct spelling and good sentence structure. Authors are responsible for the use of correct English.
  9. Articles must be submitted electronically to our OJS website. Datasets, programming and log files should be submitted to the ZBW Journal Data Archive. Starting in OJS you will be guided through the submission and uploading process for your manuscript and material.

Guidelines for Manuscripts

  1. In general, manuscripts (except pure replications, see here) should not exceed 40 pages (1.5 line spacing, 12 point font size) including tables, figures, references and appendices and should be self-contained.
  2. If possible, please use LaTeX to prepare your manuscript. Manuscripts should be submitted both as PDF and LaTex or Word document.
  3. The title page of the manuscript must contain each author’s name with corresponding information, and the title of the article, complemented by JEL classification numbers and keywords. Acknowledgments and information on grants received should be presented at the end of the text. Footnotes in the paper should be numbered consecutively.
  4. Additionally, an anonymized version of your manuscript must be submitted.
  5. The reference list should appear at the end of the text, with hyperlinks to full-text papers on the Web and DOIs. Issue numbers should be provided for all journals cited in the references. In the text, references should appear as follows: “North (1995: 29–35) finds that …” In the literature (Alesina and Gulli 1993: 95; OECD 2000: Chapter B; Rogoff 1985a, 1985b; Stern et al. 1976) it has been shown …” For the sake of brevity, “et al.” should be used when referring to more than two authors. Names and dates in the text should correspond strictly to the list of references.
  6. Datasets must be cited. In the reference list we encourage the following format: Wagner, Joachim (2017): Does online availability increase citations? A replication study of McCabe and Snyder (Review of Economics and Statistics, 2015) (replication data). Version: 1. International Journal for Re-Views in Empirical Economics. Dataset.
  7. Please provide all your references with DOIs when available.
  8. Displayed formulas should be numbered consecutively on the right as (1), (2), etc. All characters should be defined and used unambiguously. Standard italicization should be used. When referring to formulas in the text, only numbers in parentheses should be used, for example, (1). At the beginning of sentences, numbers in parentheses should be preceded by the word “equation”, for example, Equation (1).
  9. Tables should be of a reasonable number and size. Columns should be clearly designed and explanations should be given in footnotes using letters below the table body. Only the first word in each column heading and in each entry of the stub column should be capitalized. Titles should be formatted above the tables as follows: Table 1: Real GNP in Germany, 1980–1992 (millions of US dollars). Significance stars (*) should be written in the same cell as coefficients (in Latex as well as in Excel-tables).
  10. Avoid using square brackets within tables.
  11. Figures should be complete and clearly drawn. Special care should be taken to ensure that lettering and symbols are of comparable size and readable. When labeling, initial capitalization should be used. Figures should not be overloaded with information. Figures in .epf-format are preferred.

Guidelines for Replications Studies

  1. Replication studies considered for IREE should replicate original papers which are published in a peer-reviewed journal.
  2. The manuscript of scientific replications should include an abstract of no more than 150 words.
  3. Prior to submission, you must have contacted the author(s) of the replicated study to inform about the replication (both in the case of a successful as well as a failed replication). In case of a failed replication attempt, you should ask the author of the replicated study to clarify the missing information/deviating results. Your manuscript must include the information whether (and if so how) the author(s) replied to your inquiry (usually within four weeks).
  4. In case the replication fails to replicate the findings of the original study a discussion about possible reasons should be included in the manuscript.
  5. Submissions always consist of
    1) the manuscript,
    2) the program code (e.g. Stata do-file) – please write your programming in a single file,
    3) the log-file, and
    4) the data used for the replication.
  6. Whenever possible the data used must be submitted. In case of restricted data, you must provide a detailed guide for the access to the data as well as a detailed description of how to build the analysis data set upon from the raw data. Readers must be able to access this data and reproduce the analysis data set based on your description. Data files and programs can be provided in any format using any statistical package or software.
  7. Please submit the manuscript both as PDF and LaTex (preferred) or Word document to our OJS website. The data files and programs submitted to the ZBW Journal Data Archive (JDA) can be provided in any format using any statistical package or software (please see the General Instructions, Point 7).
  8. The program code must be instantly useable for readers starting with the raw data. Only if the program code allows the immediate replication of your results your submission can be considered for publication.
  9. The submitted program code should start from the raw data as publicly available and end with your presented results. This also includes that any applied packages must be installed by running your program code (e.g. for STATA: your code must include ‘ssc install [packagename]’ for any package you used). Also, the log-file must show the results of all steps of your analysis – from the raw data to the results.

Guidelines for Pure Reproduction

  1. Pure Reproductions considered for IREE should replicate original papers which are published in a peer-reviewed journal.
  2. Prior to submission, you must have contacted the author(s) of the reproduced study to inform about the reproduction (both in the case of a successful as well as a failed reproduction). In case of a failed replication attempt, you should ask the author of the reproduced study to clarify the missing information/deviating results. Your manuscript must include the information whether (and if so how) the author(s) replied to your inquiry (usually within four weeks). In case of an unsuccessful reproduction, you must additionally submit the entire correspondence with the author(s) of the original study (which will not be published).
  3. Submitted manuscripts of pure reproductions should be conceptualized as a note and do not need to exceed 150 words. Notes on pure reproductions do not contain an abstract (see Wagner 2017 as an example).
  4. In case the reproduction fails to reproduce the findings of the original study a short discussion about possible reasons should be included in the note.
  5. Submissions always consist of
    1) the manuscript,
    2) the program code (e.g. Stata do-file) – please write your programming in a single file,
    3) the log-file, and
    4) the data used for reproduction.
